About Off Script

What I'd tell you if I wasn't on commission.

I've spent the last seven years on the phones in financial services.

Four of those years I was a loan officer. The last three I've been in debt relief sales. Different companies, different products, same job in the end: get the person on the other end of the line to say yes.

When you're in sales, you don't really get to be honest. You have a script. You have rebuttals for every objection. You have a manager watching your conversion rate. And you have a commission check that only grows when people sign — whether or not signing was actually the right move for them.

Most of the people I've talked to over the years didn't need a rebuttal. They needed someone to slow down and tell them the truth.

A personal loan isn't always the answer. Debt relief isn't always the answer. Sometimes the answer is a free nonprofit credit counselor. Sometimes it's no product at all — just a plan and some patience. But you don't hear that on a sales call. There's no commission code for "honestly, you're fine, don't do anything."

Off Script is the conversation I'd have with you if I wasn't on commission. I'll point you to the credit cards, loans, and debt relief options that actually make sense when one of them is the right fit. I'll tell you plainly when none of them are. I make money when you click through to a partner from my recommendations — that's how the site stays free — but I won't recommend something I wouldn't tell my own family to do.

About the anonymity: I'm still on the phones during the day, and I'm not interested in burning bridges or violating any agreements while I build this site on the side. So you'll know me here as Jake. The name's not my real one. The experience is.

If you've ever been on the other end of a financial services call and felt like you were being pushed toward an answer that didn't quite fit you — that's why I'm here. Take what's useful. Skip what isn't. Ask me anything.

Welcome. Glad you're here.
— Jake
